One of the most unique features of staying at Riverstone Acres is direct access to the spectacular Waitawheta Valley and Kaimai-Mamaku Conservation Park.
Located at the end of Franklin Road, the walking tracks begin by crossing Riverstone Acres before continuing into the native forest beyond. From your accommodation, you can step straight onto trails that follow historic tramways, pass through regenerating native bush which leads deep into one of the North Island’s most significant conservation areas.
Historic Walks Through the Waitawheta Valley
Two of the area’s most popular DOC walks start right from the property boundary.
The Waitawheta Tramway Track follows the route of a historic logging tramway deep into the spectacular Waitawheta Gorge. Along the way you’ll discover remnants of the valley’s timber milling history, including tramway relics, historic sites, a suspension bridge and interpretive displays that tell the story of the region’s early logging days. The track continues to the historic Waitawheta Hut, nestled beside the Waitawheta River in the heart of old kauri country.
For a shorter adventure, the Daly Clearing Loop Track winds through beautiful native bush, passing groves of nīkau palms beneath towering tawa, kohekohe and pukatea forest. The walk includes Daly Clearing Hut and links with the Waitawheta Tramway Track, creating a rewarding loop through some of the region’s most impressive forest scenery.
Hauraki Rail Trail
Riverstone Acres is an ideal base for cyclists exploring the Hauraki Rail Trail.
The trail passes through some of New Zealand’s most beautiful countryside, connecting historic towns, river valleys and the Karangahake Gorge. Whether you’re tackling a short section or a multi-day adventure, you’ll find easy access to the trail from Waikino.
Discover Historic Waikino
Just minutes from Riverstone Acres, Waikino is rich in gold mining history and home to some of the region’s most fascinating heritage attractions.
Visit the Victoria Battery, once one of the largest quartz crushing plants in the Southern Hemisphere. Today, visitors can explore the preserved ruins, learn about the area’s gold mining past and discover the stories that helped shape the region.
Nearby, the Goldfields Railway offers a unique journey between Waihi and Waikino aboard heritage trains. Following the original railway line through picturesque countryside, it’s a memorable experience for families, railway enthusiasts and anyone wanting to step back in time.
Karangahake Gorge
Just a short drive from Riverstone Acres, the Karangahake Gorge is one of New Zealand’s most iconic outdoor destinations.
Explore historic gold mining tunnels, cross suspension bridges, wander alongside the Ohinemuri River and discover spectacular native bush scenery. Popular attractions include the Windows Walk, Crown Tramway Track and Karangahake Tunnel.

Waihi Beach
